Johnson Resigns, Special Election Set For 2027
School Committee · Meeting of October 5, 2026
Attleboro School Committee member Shannon Johnson announces resignation after 11 years, triggering a special election. Johnson, who chaired the Teaching and Learning Subcommittee for three terms, is leaving effective October 8 because her spouse's job is relocating the family; Chairman Rob Geddes expects a special election "mid to late February or sometime early in March" of 2027. Elsewhere, members spent much of the night debating a draft administration statement on AI, with member Larson warning "I think to sit back and wait would be a huge mistake" while member Bennett argued existing academic-integrity rules already cover most misuse.
The committee also approved sending $135,612.25 in prior-year invoices to the Municipal Council and accepted a $30,395.60 donation of two scoreboards from the Attleboro Youth Basketball Association, with subcommittee chair Bennett abstaining due to his coaching role. Superintendent Sawyer said Attleboro is funded in the bottom third of comparable districts statewide but delivers results in the top third.
